  • Susana Lein left her career in 1990 to spend nearly a decade developing permaculture systems and appropriate technologies with small farmers in Latin America. In 2000, she purchased a tract of eroded land in the foothills near Berea, KY.  She cleared an overgrown logged ridge without topsoil and built a tiny house and farm structures with gravity-fed spring water and a tiny solar electric system. 25 years later, Salamander Springs Farm remains entirely off-grid. Continuous no-till staple crop fields and permanent crop beds now have rich topsoil 10-12" deep and averaging 12% organic matter. Polyculture crop areas are integrated with contour swales, ponds, fruit & nut trees.  Known for its flavorful, nutrient-dense vegetables, fruits, cornmeal, popcorn and dry beans, Salamander Springs Farm has been a primary supplier for local farmers' markets, stores and restaurants for 23 years. The staple grains & beans are also sold online across the country. Susana teaches hands-on workshops and consults with people getting started with regenerative and permaculture practices.
